KOHL SCHOLARSHIP

The 2019 Herb Kohl Student Excellence Scholarship award is available for public, private, and homeschool students who meet two criteria: They attend a Wisconsin high school, and they will graduate at the end of the 2018-19 school year. Like last year, the application is entirely online, and available at www.kohleducation.org. Also similar to last year, there are no limitations for the number of applicants that can come from any one high school in the state of Wisconsin. There are, however, limitations on the number of packets that be forwarded from each CESA region to the Statewide Selection Committee. Regional allocations are representative of the number of students who attend school in each CESA.

One significant difference this year is that letters of recommendation are made private to the applicant, and the requests for a person to submit a letter of recommendation are not sent to the recommenders until after the student submits his or her application. Therefore, schools are advised to support early student submissions, to allow time for recommenders to complete their work. A packet with less than the full 3 letters of recommendation will not be scored or advanced to the Statewide Selection Committee.

Other advice and instructions for the 2019 Kohl Awards can be found in this attached packet and rubric, or found on both the Kohl website or the DPI website ( https://dpi.wi.gov/teacher-year/program/selection-process/kohl-foundation)

Finally, if there are any questions related to public school student applications, please direct them to Mark Mueller at (608) 266-3945 or via email at mark.mueller@dpi.wi.gov.
